street-facing garden/carpark redesign + installation

Shadyside, PA / Fall 2020

Project goals: Enhance the front entrance/carpark of this home by brightening the garden patches with unique textures and layers. Create a screening effect toward the foundation, and add color in areas near the sidewalk in this high-pedestrian neighborhood.

Challenges: Pre-existing car park remains; full sun all day; construction rubble soil; low maintenance a must

Strategies: We aimed to create a zen-like feeling as the clients enter their front door. Spring bulbs, native pollinators, and large flowering shrubs maximize the small space and provide multi-season color and interest.

Outcome: The end result is colorful, textured, layered — like a good hair cut! Tall iris and amsonia mix together for a delightful result. A row of Little Henry adds punch with its autumnal red hue.

Highlights: Featured natives: bee balm and cone flower. Unexpected sea holly for fun. Astor for fall color. Spring bulbs for early punches of yellow and orange. Winterberry to keep things lively in Febuary. Oak leaf hydrangea to tie everything together.
