full-property master plan + stone patio + installation
Ingram, PA / Summer 2020
Project goals: Creation of a more integrated and accessible space for a family’s multi-season enjoyment. Focus on making a ‘softer space’ to allow for active, yet safe, play for the clients’ young child.
Challenges: Extensive overgrowth, invasive/ unwanted species such as grape vine, privet, saplings, Rose of Sharon, and poison ivy, throughout. Old, large trees with spreading roots and a wide canopy prohibiting anything from growing — including grass. An active deer population regularly accessing the property.
Strategies: A complete makeover! Removal of invasives; thinning of tree growth — keeping only desirables; complete replacement of patio area with new stone; leveling the yard and installing sod; addition of deer-proof plants, creation of “pleasure nooks” around the property for relaxing, bird watching, growing flowers, shady respite, and enjoying sunny open spaces.
Outcome: One of our favorite projects to date. The client actively participated during the development of the master plan to achieve a shared vision for the property. The resulting backyard is now a serene oasis and safe play space. The front bed expansion/makeover was a win for curb appeal, adding interest while maintaining a sense of privacy from the porch.
Highlights: We love the “viburnum woodland” area we created in the back corner of the yard to create a screen and a natural, defined property border. In the front beds, Amalancher “Autumn Brilliance” and a lovely Stewardia add interest; bright green chartreuse hops pop against a dark gray screen; native hydrangeas, a variety of viburnum, and a handful of great native flowering shrubs round out the planting additions that tie this master plan together.
